The design of the storage location system largely determines the performance of WMS system, especially the efficiency and accuracy of the operations related to inventory transfer (including shelving, inspection, tally, inventory, etc

With the gradual development of B2C industry and the needs of business, the cargo location system has developed step by step from simple to complex
The following describes several kinds of cargo location systems from simple to complex
It should be noted that these cargo location systems are not independent of each other, but evolved step by step
Simple systems are often the basis of complex systems, and complex systems are the upgrading of simple systems
Next, WMS will introduce three kinds of cargo location systems:

One to one correspondence
In the absence of a storage location system, the biggest problem encountered by the warehouse management of a large number of SKUs is that we can't find the required SKUs
Because the warehouse is too large and there are too many things, the memory of the human brain is limited, and it is unable to cope with large-scale cargo location information
In order to solve this problem, the simplest solution is to divide the land into two parts:

Divide the warehouse into several areas, named location 1, location 2, &hellip& hellip;

Put a SKU in one of the areas, and then record this information to form a table as follows
In this table, SKU and location are in one-to-one correspondence

Every time when putting products into the warehouse, first check this table to see which SKUs have records, and then put them in the location in the record

Every time you need to use a product, you can also check the table to get the corresponding location of this SKU, and then go to the corresponding location to pick up the goods
As long as the form is maintained according to this process, the location information of all SKUs will be recorded in the form, which solves the most urgent problem mentioned at the beginning

“ One to one correspondence ” The storage location system solves the most urgent problem, but the most obvious problem of this architecture is found in use: the limited number of manageable SKUs
For example, in a 10000 square meter warehouse, in addition to about 4000 square meters for receiving and shipping operations, about 6000 square meters can be used for storage
In the storage area, the passageway accounts for at least 60% of the area, and the actual storage area is only 2400 square meters
Suppose the shelf has four layers, each layer is 40cm high, and the actual storage area is 9600 square meters

The long tail theory shows that the closer it is to the end of the long tail, the smaller the sales volume of products and the less inventory it needs to reserve
If products with only one or two items can be easily separated in appearance (such as plush toys and mice), there is no problem in putting them in the same location
In this way, the number of manageable SKUs can be increased
Using this method, the number of manageable SKUs can generally be increased by more than 2 times compared with the basic storage location system, which varies according to the types of SKUs managed by the warehouse

Many to many:
Use “ Many to one ” The storage location system can greatly increase the number of SKUs in warehouse management, but there are also problems: after a large number of SKUs are prepared, they cannot be put down in the storage location
Limited by inventory appliances (including shelves, trays, etc
), the size of the unit area in the warehouse is roughly fixed, and the maximum size of a location will not exceed the size of one pallet
However, the quantity of physical objects managed by the warehouse is uncertain
Some special promotional SKUs may sell thousands of pieces in a day, so a large number of goods will be prepared before the promotion, and the goods prepared cannot be accommodated in one location at all
This is “ Many to one ” The biggest problem
The solution to the problem is also very simple, in “ Many to one ” In, the storage location table is a many to one relationship, that is, one SKU can only be placed in one location, while multiple SKUs can be stored in one location; If this relationship is further expanded to form a many to many relationship, that is, one SKU can be placed in multiple locations, and multiple SKUs can be stored in one location, the problem encountered by a large number of SKUs is solved
