1、 Overview
There will be various transient and transient overvoltage in various transmission and distribution systems
Due to the existence of this overvoltage, various overvoltage accidents will often occur, which will seriously endanger the 1 operation of primary equipment, especially dry insulation equipment such as rotating motors

Rotating electrical machines (generators, condenser, large motors, etc
) have some characteristics different from other primary equipment in terms of insulation structure, performance and insulation coordination

(1) In the electrical equipment with the same voltage level, the impact withstand voltage level of the insulation of rotating motor is low

The reasons are:
① The motor has a high-speed rotating rotor, so it can only use solid medium
In the manufacturing process, the solid medium is easy to be damaged and holes or gaps are easy to appear in the insulation
Therefore, partial discharge is easy to occur during operation, resulting in insulation deterioration;
② The operating conditions of motor insulation are the most severe, which is subject to the combined action of heat, mechanical vibration, moisture in the air, pollution, electromagnetic stress and other factors, and the aging speed is fast;
③ The electric field of the motor insulation structure is relatively uniform, and its impact coefficient is close to 1
Under overvoltage, its electrical strength is the weakest link
Therefore, the rated voltage and insulation level of the motor cannot be too high

(2)  Turn to turn insulation requires that the steepness of intrusive wave is strictly limited

  Because the inter turn capacitance of the motor winding is very small and discontinuous, the overvoltage wave can only propagate along the winding conductor after being forced into the motor winding, and the length of each turn of the winding is much longer than that of the transformer winding
The overvoltage acting between two adjacent turns is directly proportional to the steepness of the intrusion wave
Therefore, in order to protect the turn to turn insulation of motor, the steepness of intrusion wave must be strictly limited
